Cook housekeeper: The modern form of housekeeping

In the modern days; the need, demand as well as supply for housekeepers has gone down considerably, and this is due to many reasons. Firstly, nowadays there is recession and inflation and not many families can afford to keep a housekeeper and incur such a vast amount of expenses. Very few people are so rich that they can afford a live-in housekeeper. Secondly, equality in income has been brought about.

Earlier there was a distinct upper class and a lower class, but this has been reduced to a considerable extent, and this has reduced the number of housekeepers because now less people from the lower class are available for work and also because now lesser people from the upper class can afford it. Thirdly, there has been a significant development in technology and these have considerably contributed in replacing housekeepers.

However, there are still a few countries where cheap supply of labor is available, and in such cases the middle class families might be able to employ housekeepers but the position of housekeepers have changed considerably. In countries like India where there is large unemployment and a large supply of cheap labor, households generally employ a cook housekeeper.

This is different from the traditional form of housekeeper and performs cooking and cleaning duties, but since there is no hierarchy of maids now, the cook housekeeper does not manage the other maids and is the sole working staff of the household. This modern form of housekeeping is highly prevalent in some countries, and cook housekeepers are generally employed.
